Before You Start
Gears of War: E-Day is the prequel to the classic cover-shooter series, launching October 6 (Premium early access October 1). Everything revolves around cover: take it, pop out, reposition. We'll expand this page with hands-on details after launch; for now it's built on the series' classic mechanics and officially confirmed info.
How to Play — Step by Step
Pre-loading opened September 29, 2026. Reserve 115GB of SSD space on PC (about 120GB on Xbox). Game Pass Ultimate / PC Game Pass members can download and play on day one.
Set brightness, HDR, and subtitles on first launch. Xbox Series X|S is optimized for 4K at up to 60 FPS — confirm performance mode in display settings.
The heart of Gears: snap to cover, pop out to aim, or blind-fire to suppress. Never stand in the open — the Locust hit hard on E-Day, and cover is your lifeline.
The series' signature mechanic: while reloading, hit reload again in the white 'perfect' zone of the reload bar for an instant reload and a brief damage boost. Mastering it separates veterans from rookies.
Hold sprint to hunch-run across the battlefield or dive for cover. You can't shoot while roadie running, so plan your route first.
Get close with the Lancer for its iconic chainsaw-bayonet execution. Note you're vulnerable during the animation — watch your surroundings.
The story campaign supports online two-player co-op. Classic teamwork: one draws fire, the other flanks. We'll expand this section after launch.
The rebuilt PvE wave-defense mode: coordinate with your squad, hold firing positions, and revive downed teammates fast. Teamwork beats aim.
Fast PvP. Use cover movement, avoid straight-line duels, and learn each map's cover layout to climb.
The game autosaves. Tune audio, subtitles, and sensitivity to your preference before starting the campaign.
Beginner Tips
- Cover first, always: more than 2 seconds in the open is asking for it — build a move → cover → shoot rhythm
- Practice Active Reload: the perfect-reload damage boost is a game-changer on higher difficulties
- Blind-fire to suppress: you don't always need to pop out — suppression creates openings for teammates
- Communicate in co-op: callouts, focus fire, and fast revives matter more than aim in Horde Siege
- Pre-load early: it's a 115GB download — pre-loading opened September 29, don't wait for launch day
