Worked example
1793000000 is 26 October 2026, 09:33:20 UTC. Ten digits means seconds; thirteen means milliseconds. Passing seconds where milliseconds are expected lands the date in 1970.
Unix time counts seconds since 1 January 1970 UTC, ignoring leap seconds. It is timezone-free by definition, which is why it is the right thing to store — the timezone belongs at the display layer, not in the database.
The seconds/milliseconds trap
JavaScript uses milliseconds; almost everything else uses seconds. A timestamp of 1793000000 interpreted as milliseconds is 21 January 1970. This calculator switches on digit count, which is the reliable heuristic.
