Worked example

40 hours at 20 plus 6 hours at time-and-a-half is 800 + 180 = 980. The blended rate is 21.30, not 20 — useful when comparing to a salaried offer.

Overtime rules vary by jurisdiction: the multiplier, the weekly threshold above which it applies, and whether it is calculated daily or weekly. This calculator does the arithmetic for the parameters you give it and does not assume any particular labour law.

The blended rate

Total pay divided by total hours is the number to compare against a salaried offer. A job paying 20 an hour with ten hours of overtime every week pays the same annually as one paying 21.30 for fifty hours — but only the first has a contract that stops at forty.
