Worked example

A data URI starts with the MIME type, then an optional ;base64 marker, then the payload. Without the prefix, the browser has to guess and usually guesses wrong.

Data URIs turn up in stored avatars, inline SVG in CSS, and API responses that return an image as a JSON string. Decoding one by eye is impossible, so the practical question is always "what is this and how big is it".

Where they break

A line-wrapped base64 payload fails because the newlines are part of the string. Some systems store the payload without the data: prefix, which is why this accepts both.
