Count before rearranging
A balanced six-letter English rack often has two or three vowels. With TRAIN, the A and I can sit between the consonant frame TR_N; with OCEAN, three vowels suggest open syllables rather than dense clusters. Counting does not solve the rack, but it tells you which shapes are plausible.
Handle vowel-heavy racks
When four or more vowels appear, test common vowel teams—AI, EA, EE, OA, OU—and endings such as -IE or -EA. In AERIE, separating AE-RIE is more productive than pushing every vowel together. Short utility words also matter: AE and AI may be allowed in some word-game dictionaries but not in everyday classroom lists, so verify the rule set.
Handle consonant-heavy racks
Consonant-heavy racks usually depend on digraphs and blends: CH, SH, TH, PH, BR, CL, STR. The rack SCRATCH looks impossible if every consonant is treated alone; grouping SC, R, and TCH exposes its structure. Y can act as a vowel in words like MYTH and RHYTHM, which is why a mechanical vowel count needs linguistic judgment.
Decide what to exchange
In tile games, a rack with six consonants is not automatically bad if it contains productive pairs. RETAINS has a flexible balance; BCDFGKQ does not. Keep letters that form several combinations and exchange isolated high-friction tiles when the board offers no anchor. Good rack management optimizes the next two turns, not only the current score.
