Remove a likely ending
If a rack contains I-N-G, first set those letters aside and solve the remainder. LISTENING becomes LISTEN + ING; READING becomes READ + ING. This method works because endings are grammatical packages. It fails when the apparent ending belongs to the root—SING, for example, is not S + ING—so always test the finished word.
Test productive prefixes
RE-, UN-, IN-, DIS-, and PRE- are useful because they attach to many bases. From REACT, the RE frame leaves ACT; from UNDO, UN leaves DO. Do not force a prefix merely because its letters exist: RENT is not RE + NT, and INLET is not necessarily understood as IN + LET. Structure must agree with meaning.
Watch spelling changes
Adding an affix can change the base spelling. RUN becomes RUNNING by doubling N; MAKE becomes MAKING by dropping E; HAPPY becomes HAPPINESS by changing Y to I. Anagram practice is useful here because it makes those transformations visible, but a simple letter inventory cannot infer a missing or doubled letter.
Turn affixes into a search order
Use a fixed order: test inflectional endings (-S, -ED, -ER, -ING), then common derivational endings (-NESS, -MENT, -TION), then prefixes. On a seven-letter rack, removing a three-letter ending leaves a manageable four-letter core. This is more reliable than scanning an unstructured list of thousands of words.

The strongest habit is to separate hard constraints—letter counts, length, fixed positions—from helpful clues such as frequency and familiar patterns. Use the tool to narrow possibilities, then use meaning and context to choose.
