What Is the Black Hat?
The Black Hat is a special trigger item in Sprunki — usually shown as a black top hat icon in the selection area. It isn't a musical character: it's the switch that activates Horror Mode, transforming every character on stage into their dark, corrupted forms and shifting the audio to eerie, distorted versions.
It originated as the community's standard horror trigger and appears in most mainline builds and phase mods. If a Sprunki version has a horror mode, the Black Hat (or a phase-specific equivalent) is almost always how you activate it.
How to Use the Black Hat
Look in the bottom character/item bar for a black top hat. It's usually separated from the musical characters.
Drag it exactly like a character and drop it anywhere on the stage.
All characters morph into horror forms — visuals darken, sounds distort. This is Horror Mode.
Horror sounds still layer. Add or remove characters to compose in the corrupted style.
Drag the hat off or reset the stage to return to normal mode in most builds.
What Exactly Changes
| Element | Normal mode | After Black Hat |
|---|---|---|
| Characters | Bright, cheerful designs | Dark, corrupted horror redesigns |
| Background | Colorful stage | Darkened, ominous atmosphere |
| Sounds | Upbeat loops | Eerie, distorted versions of the same loops |
| Mixing | Standard layering | Layering still works — now with horror sounds |
Troubleshooting
- No Black Hat icon? Your build may use a different trigger — some mods use specific character combos instead. Check that version's guide.
- Hat does nothing? Try dropping it in the center of the stage, or on a specific character — behavior varies by build.
- Only one character changed? Some builds support per-character transformation: drag the hat directly onto a single character.
- Can't revert? Use the stage reset button to return to normal mode.
Tips
- Build first, transform second: compose a full normal mix, then drop the hat for maximum before/after drama.
- The morph is the money shot: screen-record the exact transformation moment for Shorts and TikTok.
- Compare across phases: the hat exists in most phases, but each phase's horror designs differ.
