Release Date & Platforms
Modern Warfare 4 launches worldwide on October 23, 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam / Battle.net), and Nintendo Switch 2. It does not support PS4 or Xbox One — the first COD to fully skip last-gen consoles. The Xbox version supports Play Anywhere: buy once, play on both Xbox console and PC.
Why Switch 2 matters: this is Call of Duty's first return to a Nintendo platform in 13 years — and the series' first native Switch 2 title.
Campaign Setting
The campaign is set amid a full-scale war on the Korean Peninsula. You play as Private Park Hyun-joon, a young Korean soldier surviving on collapsing front lines after the North launches a full invasion.
Meanwhile, Captain Price has gone rogue — a fugitive from the organization he once served, running his own revenge operation. His secret mission collides with the forces behind the invasion, and the war spirals out of control.
Missions span multiple theaters: Korean trench warfare, close-quarters street fighting in New York, high-speed chases in Paris, SAS night raids in Mumbai, and city-scale reclamation battles. The campaign can be played offline.
Multiplayer Core Innovations
Ballistic Authority
Modern Warfare 4 uses a brand-new "weapon-first" tech architecture with one core promise: no random spread — every shot is true.
- Hipfire is more direct and predictable, matching exactly where the weapon points
- Recoil, aim convergence, and weapon handling fully rebuilt
- Depth of field and visual effects optimized for better enemy visibility
Gunny Weapon Intelligence
The game introduces Gunny: one-button switching between close-range, balanced, and long-range loadout presets. New players get reliable builds instantly; veterans can experiment with weapon types and playstyles.
12 All-New 6v6 Maps
Launch includes 12 brand-new 6v6 core maps. Known maps: Rooftops, Silkworm, Transit 213 (the new Shipment), Cachette, Lotus, Kill Block, Lithium, Mumbai, Munition, Reactor U92, and more.
Kill Block is a dynamic map that reconfigures its layout every round, with 500+ spatial configurations.
Apex Attachments
Max-level weapons unlock Apex attachments — unique gameplay effects and weapon properties. Apex attachments are independent of regular Gunsmith slots and don't consume attachment slots.
DMZ Extraction Mode
DMZ returns as Modern Warfare 4's third pillar, heavily reworked. The new mode is set in the Khajin Exclusion Zone — one of the largest maps in Call of Duty history.
DMZ's timeline is set after the campaign: you deploy behind enemy lines as a covert operative, making hard calls every deployment — which objectives to chase, what loot to take, when to exfil. Solo or squad deployment supported.

Beginner Tips
- Pick five guns — don't get greedy — 33 launch weapons, but don't try to max them all. Choose five you like across two or three categories and max those.
- Use the Gunny system — unsure how to build a loadout? Gunny's one-button presets (close/balanced/long) get you started fast.
- Hit the firing range first — the in-game firing range lets you compare builds, test attachments, and evaluate performance before a match.
- Don't underestimate your secondary — in close quarters, switching to your sidearm is often faster than reloading.
- Pick the right difficulty & mode — start the campaign on standard; in multiplayer, learn the maps in Team Deathmatch and Domination; try DMZ only after you're comfortable with extraction shooters.

Common Beginner Mistakes
| Mistake | Consequence | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Trying to max all 33 guns | Spread thin, master none | Pick five, focus upgrades |
| Skipping the firing range | Enter matches not knowing gun feel | Test every new unlock first |
| Not using Gunny | Inefficient loadout building | Use Gunny for quick presets |
| Solo-rushing DMZ | High difficulty, easy ambushes | Squad up and learn the systems first |
| Ignoring dynamic map changes | Kill Block changes every round — easy to get lost | Re-evaluate routes each round |
